This very popular, practical, short course has been running at the IOE for more than ten years. Its content is updated regularly to reflect current expectations nationally and in the schools of the Deputy and Assistant- Headteacher. The focus is on learners and learning.

Course Description

This course has been designed to equip participants with knowledge, skills and strategies needed to continue the dynamic development of schools that will be very effective for the pupils.

Participants will work through a range of activities to:

1. consider the role of the deputy in relation to others, particularly the Headteacher
2. learn how to plan for the strategic and operational development of the school
3. identify approaches for distributing leadership to maximise pupils' progress and achievement
4.  consider the implications of current changes in government policy, and the most recent OfSTED Framework for leaders of schools
5. career progression- a brief overview of the selection process.

Using case study materials this course gives participants the opportunity to explore a range of aspects including:

1. key purposes and main tasks for modern deputies and assistant heads and the differences that might be between the two roles
2. how schools are changing and some implications for leaders
3. strategic and operational planning and how to do it
4.  understanding the impact of the school's culture and how to change it
5. the most recent OfSTED framework, the implications for leadership and management
6. a talk by a practicing deputy head
7. career planning, half a day which will give a brief overview of the selection process

Kathy Lowers is a specialist in primary school leadership and management and has worked as an independent consultant for 20 years.
